UPG Alum's First Poetry Collection Highlights the Homefront Costs of War

Poet Jenna Szypulski will celebrate the release of her first collection, “Fully Loaded, Automatic,” with a reading and book launch party Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. in Village Hall 118. The event is free and open to the public. A booksigning will follow the reading.

 Szypulski graduated from The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in 2012 with a degree in English Writing. Her work has been featured in the campus’s official literary magazine, “Pendulum.” She is also a member of the National English Honors Society, Sigma Tau Delta.

 “Fully Loaded, Automatic” is a collection of poetry in which Szypulski details her tense, battle-weary relationship with a Marine veteran who’s just returned from Afghanistan. The poems are personal, sometimes dark, and even heartbreaking. Szypulski wrote the manuscript during her final year at Pitt-Greensburg as her senior English Writing Capstone project. Writing professors Lori Jakiela and Judith Vollmer were Szypulski’s mentors for the project.

 The chapbook is the first to be published by the university’s new literary publishing class. The class, developed and taught by Jakiela, is homebase for Littleburg Press, a small student-oriented press dedicated to giving current students hands-on experience with digital and traditional publishing, as well as publishing work by the university’s Writing Program graduates. 

The press will release a second chapbook, Megan Stewart’s “A Study in Grace and Ashes,” during the Spring semester.
